How We Got Started
Chess Mates Foundation was created in 1989 by Mr. Henry Eisenhardt, then 78 year old retired Seattle businessman.
Noting the growing incidence of poor academic performance, youth crime, violence, drugs and gangs, Mr. Eisenhardt was convinced children needed positive, structured activities to divert them from undesirable influences that can lead to academic failure, delinquency, and crime.
With this in mind, he started, in collaboration with Seattle Public Schools, after-school chess programs for children in elementary grades. In 1995, Mr. Eisenhardt received the Golden Apple Award from the State of Washington for an outstanding contribution to public education.
